Just after he opened his first boutique in Mayfair, London, we caught up with the designer on his post-fashion-month plans
Chinese-born designer Huishan Zhang, who trained in haute couture at Dior, has been making a name for himself since graduating from the BA fashion course at Central Saint Martins in London, where he also earned an MA in pattern cutting. Chosen by Delphine Arnault to work initially on leather goods while he was at the prestigious school of art and design, Zhang subsequently worked in Dior’s haute couture atelier. His own design studio is based in London and his debut 2011 collection was picked up by Browns. We caught up with the designer to find out more…
With fashion month over, what have you most enjoyed about the SS18 season shows?
Getting my collections in front of the industry during fashion week is very exciting. All the hard work put into researching, designing and creating comes together and it feels ready for an audience.
Which have been the best-received pieces from your collection?
The dresses always do very well with customers and tend to be the best-sellers, but this season I have seen a shift to more separates, such as blouses and skirts, which is exciting.
Which other London Fashion Week designers do you admire and why?
All designers showing during LFW have my full admiration. I know how much work and time has gone into getting everything ready for this time of year.
Where do you go in London to seek inspiration?
The streets of London are full of culture and inspiration thanks to the freedom of expression and infinite personal styles you get to see around you all day.
What do you think makes British fashion unique?
There is a huge focus and natural understanding of people’s personal creativity. British fashion is designed for the individual and the woman who is not afraid to express herself.
How do you think the London fashion scene has evolved?
There is a huge international customer base in London which highlights how the collections coming out of LFW speak to the rest of the world.
What is your favourite place to shop in London?
What do you like most about the city?
The eclectic way each borough creates its own playground of amazing parks, restaurants, art galleries and shopping.
Who is the ultimate Huishan Zhang woman?
A woman who is confident, cultured and openminded to fashion – and not led by trends.
What are your usual post-fashion-month plans?
I like to put time aside to travel for inspiration – this can be locally or internationally.
